TEACHING EXPERIENCE |
2003-present Assistant
Professor - Meadows School of the Arts, Southern Methodist
University, Dallas,
TX. I teach undergraduate
beginning, intermediate and advanced film and video production courses,
covering all aspects of non-sync and sync-sound film and video production;
Graduate level advanced film production courses. In film production
classes, each student makes their own film in addition to working
together on group class projects. Additional classes: Lighting for
Film and Television - this is a hands on production class to examine
and practice the art of lighting; Advanced Film Seminar (informally
known as the "Get a Job" class) - students prepare themselves
for careers as filmmakers, enter their films in festivals and explore
opportunities in the film industry; Directed Studies - advise students
on their film projects undertaken outside of a specific course; Undergraduate
and Graduate academic advising; Graduate thesis advising.
2001-2003 Adjunct Instructor - School
of Visual Arts, New York, NY. First and second year undergraduate
film and video production courses, covering non-sync and sync sound
film and video production. Students are required to work in both
film and video and complete one project each per semester.
2001-2003 Thesis Advisor - School of
Visual Arts, New York, NY. Advise fourth year students on their
Thesis projects from conception through
completion.
1994 Teacher - Designed and taught
course on optical printing filmmaking at Chicago Filmmakers Film
Cooperative. Course included color
and light theory, motion picture film hand-processing, use and operation
of optical printer. Each student completed a 16mm film.
1989-1990 Teacher - English as a foreign
language, to Spanish professionals at Kings College School
of English, Barcelona, Spain.

RELATED PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE |
1998-present Film
Director - Responsible for creating a specific vision for the
project. This covers all
aspects of the production
from conception to completion and includes: technical and aesthetic
approach, crew, locations, set design, actors, wardrobe, sound, etc.
I cast, rehears and direct the actors. I work with the Cinematographer
in planning the look of the film and how to achieve it, and with the
Producer in staying on budget and on schedule. After shooting I oversee
the edit, sound design and mix, through to the finished deliverable
product. See Filmography for credits.
1993-present Cinematographer - Responsible
for: all camera and lighting decisions, execution of
Director's
concept and vision, orchestration of the crew. I am extensively
involved throughout the duration of the project, including before
and after the shoot. Duties include: shot-list planning with the
Director; film stock and equipment testing; lighting and equipment
orders; location and equipment logistics and scheduling; camera
placement; lens choice and framing; directing the lighting; supervising
the film to tape transfer; supervising final print or tape output.
Second camera operator involves shooting footage additional to the
principal camera.
Selected Cinematography Credits
I have shot four, feature length narrative films including one on
35mm. One of these, a futuristic science fiction film entitled After
the Apocalypse, has played in festivals around the world, including
SXSW (South by Southwest), Los Angeles Film Festival, Calgary International
Film Festival, London International Film Festival, and Lausane International
Film Festival (Switzerland). "Billy 528", one of some
twenty-odd dramatic short films that I have shot, was purchased
by and broadcast on Showtime. |

Shooting documentaries has taken
me to many interesting countries including Finland, Turkey, Poland,
Nicaragua and Botswana; several of these documentaries have screened
in major American and European film festivals including Rotterdam
International Film Festival and Margaret Meade International Film
Festival, as well as at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Additionally,
I have done second camera work on other documentaries, including
two for renowned experimental filmmaker Barbara Hammer.
I have shot numerous music videos, for bands including: The Stills,
Solex, Girls Against Boys, Mudhoney and Veruca Salt. I have also
been a second camera operator on music videos featuring artists
such as David Bowie, 10,000 Maniacs, Goo Goo Dolls and Motley Crüe.
Clients for spots and promos for whom I have shot include DDB Needham
Worldwide, Sesame Street, MTV and VH1.
1999-2000 Optical Printer - Set-up and
operation of optical printing bench. Optical blow-ups and
reductions
of films; contact printing; layout.
1999 Assistant Lighting Designer -
"In the City" Exhibit, Brooklyn Children's Museum, Brooklyn,
NY. Created and executed site specific
lighting design.
1995, 1996 Production Supervisor - MTV
Animation project for Filmmaker Heather McAdams. Set-up
animation
stand, coordinated cell painting, helped shoot animation, conformed
negative.
1996-2001 Custom hand processor - Motion
picture film; color and black and white. Hand processing
film
gives it a unique look, used primarily as an effect for music videos,
etc..
1993-1995 Technician - Repair and maintenance
of the Oxberry Optical Printer for the School of the Art
Institute
of Chicago.
